How to Prepare for Your First Acupuncture Appointment

Stepping into the world of acupuncture for the first time can feel both exciting and a little nerve-wracking. Whether you’re seeking relief from a specific condition, exploring a holistic approach to wellness, or simply curious about how acupuncture works, your first appointment is a wonderful opportunity to take a proactive step towards better health.

To make the experience as smooth and beneficial as possible, here’s a guide on how to prepare and what to expect during your visit.

Before Your Appointment

1. Eat a Light Meal

Arriving on an empty stomach isn’t ideal for acupuncture. Eating a light meal or snack an hour or two before your appointment helps stabilise your energy and ensures you won’t feel lightheaded or uncomfortable during the session. Avoid heavy, greasy meals and excessive caffeine, as they may make you feel uneasy (in general, not just during acupuncture!).

2. Dress Comfortably

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to areas like your arms, legs and back. In some cases I'll ask you to unrobe so that I can drape you with towels and do some gua sha on your neck and shoulders and/or cupping down your back. If you remain clothed, it’s helpful to wear something that can be rolled up or adjusted easily.

3. Bring Your Health History

At our first appointment together, I will take the time to discuss your health concerns, lifestyle, and treatment goals. Bring any relevant medical history or information about current treatments, as this can provide valuable context for tailoring your care. This includes recent or past blood test results, scan result reports, surgical findings reports, treatment plans from other healthcare providers (e.g. diet plan or list of supplements) and whatever else you think might be necessary to share with me.

4. Plan Your Day

Try to avoid scheduling anything overly strenuous or stressful right after your appointment. Acupuncture is deeply relaxing, and giving yourself time to rest or reflect afterward allows the treatment to fully integrate.

What to Expect During Your First Visit

When you arrive, you’ll be welcomed into a calming space designed to help you feel at ease. The first appointment begins with a detailed consultation. This is your chance to share your health story, ask questions, and set goals for your treatment.

Once the consultation is complete, I’ll explain the treatment plan and begin the session. Fine, hair-thin needles are gently inserted at specific points on your body, stimulating the flow of Qi (energy) and promoting balance. For many, this is a deeply relaxing experience, often accompanied by a sense of warmth or tingling. For sensitive patients, I find it really helps to calm the nerves when I count down from 3 and work with your rythme of breath when inserting the needles.

If you’re feeling nervous about needles, let me reassure you: the sensations are minimal, and your comfort is my top priority.

Tips for a Positive Experience

1. Stay Open-Minded

Acupuncture works holistically, addressing not just physical symptoms but also emotional and energetic imbalances. Be open to the process and trust your body’s innate ability to heal. I'll explain more about what points I'm choosing for you and why When we're in session.

2. Communicate Freely

If you’re feeling unsure about anything—whether it’s a sensation during treatment or questions about your care—don’t hesitate to speak up. Open communication helps create a partnership in your healing journey. I know some of us can be shy, so don't worry, I'll be check in regularly with you to make sure you're feeling good.

3. Focus on Relaxation

Think of your appointment as a time to unwind. Close your eyes, take deep breaths, and allow your body to rest. Once I've met you, I'll most likely teach you one of many simple breathwork techniques that you can try out while renting on the treatment bed. Many clients find themselves so relaxed that they drift off to sleep!
